After promotion to the Premier League was secured Monday night, Newcastle United fans are now waiting for one more highlight to top a successful season – the relegation for their arch-rivals Sunderland. The Black Cats have had a turgid time under David Moyes, and look odds-on to swap places with Newcastle United, taking their place in the Championship.
And with things looking pretty grim at the Stadium of Light, HITC Sport wondered just how long the Black Cats might find themselves stuck in the Championship. The club don’t appear to have the funds to match teams like Newcastle United, but will still require a rebuild in the summer: including a possible change of manager.
So how long do Newcastle United fans think their rivals will stay down for? HITC Sport travelled to meet Magpies fans to find out their views (see video above)…

“I don’t think they’ll get back up” said one Newcastle United fan, “It’s a retirement club now.” Another Newcastle fan added that he thought it would take “forever” for the Black Cats to return to the top flight, with many Newcastle fans agreeing.
“I don’t want them to come back up” added another Magpies fan. But won’t some Newcastle fans miss the derby day atmosphere? “I think they’ll go down another league” added another Newcastle fan.
“They’re going to do a Leeds” said another Newcastle fan, who thinks that Sunderland could be doomed to Championship football for years to come. “They’re just rubbish” added another. Newcastle fans are loving this, aren’t they?!
