Leeds United have seen a lot of players head out the exit door over the last 15 years, but who do the fans regard as the biggest traitor?

Despite spending the last 13 years in the English Championship, Leeds United are still one of the biggest teams in the country. Filled with a rich history of big name players, Leeds United fans have been plenty of stars come and go over the years, with some leaving under a cloud and some with the fans best intentions.

But which departure are Leeds United fans the most bitter about? Are there any particular players who still leave a sour taste in the mouth when mentioned at Elland Road? Or are Leeds United fans pretty good at just forgiving and forgetting? HITC Sport spoke to Leeds fans to find out…

“Harry Kewell” was a name that cropped up amongst a number of Leeds United supporters. The Australian midfielder came through the Leeds United academy, making his first appearance in 1996. But in 2003, the Aussie international departed Elland Road for Liverpool, who he went on to make 93 appearances for before leaving for Turkey.

“Alan Smith” was also a name that came up. Another youth academy graduate, Alan Smith made 172 appearances for Leeds United between 1998-2004, scoring 38 times. Despite being a popular figure, Smith left Elland Road to join one of the clubs biggest rivals: Manchester United; a move which unsurprisingly did not go down well amongst the Leeds faithful.

“It’s just something you don’t do; it’s like Newcastle to Sunderland or the other way around.” Perhaps the criticism of Smith is a little harsh, considering he was leaving a relegated side for one of the best teams in the country. But still, it must have been a real stab in the back for Leeds fans.
