The Southampton defender and Everton striker are top of Chelsea’s transfer target list for the upcoming window.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte
According to a recent report in the Daily Mirror, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has made signing Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku his two biggest priorities this summer.
Dutch defender van Dijk, who is 25-years-old, has been a rock at the heart of Southampton’s defence this season, and former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku is currently the Premier League’s top scorer with 24 goals.
Chelsea are currently top of the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur hot on their heels. Since Antonio Conte’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, the Blues have been transformed into arguably the best team in the Premier League.
However, the club are facing the possibility of a number of high profile departures in the summer. Club captain and Chelsea stalwart John Terry has announced that he will leave Chelsea at the end of the season, and Blues fans also fear that star striker Diego Costa’s time at Stamford Bridge could be up.
Chelsea’s John Terry
Dutch defender van Dijk, who has impressed at both Celtic and Southampton, could be the perfect man to step into the big hole which will be left by John Terry. Equally comfortable in playing in a three or a two at the back, van Dijk’s versatility could well match Antonio Conte’s style perfectly, and his ability to step out and play the ball would add another dimension to Chelsea’s play.
Chelsea fans will be a lot more familiar with Lukaku. The Begian striker has been in sensational form this season, and has really impressed for Ronald Koeman’s side. With the possibility of Champions League football with Chelsea, the option to return to Stamford Bridge may well prove to good to turn down. The striker, who was sold by Jose Mourinho to Everton, may also feel like he has something to prove in a Chelsea shirt.
