Leicester City would do well to reinforce their back line with a strong central defender that has European experience, and there is an English international that should be on their watch list.

Leicester City could do with another centre-back to give them greater mobility and experience at the back, despite already signing Harry Maguire.

Morgan and Huth’s absence was noticeable when Leicester City went down 1-6 to Tottenham Hotspur in May, as reported by the BBC. Leicester’s two big centre-backs are not always going to be available.

While Craig Shakespeare has been on the look out, according to the Leicester Mercury, he has already had a £10 million bid for West Bromwhich Albion’s Jonny Evans rejected. Is it time for Leicester to look elsewhere in the market?

Leicester City’s manager should cast his eyes over to Old Trafford at Evans’ former teammate, where Chris Smalling wants to clarify his position at Manchester United, according to the Daily Mail. This would be a superb signing that would add another natural leader to the team.

The 27-year-old English centre-back is dropping out of contention for a starting place at United, which will not do him any favours in a season that ends with a World Cup.

Smalling made just 18 appearances for Manchester United in 2016-17, having picked up a series of injuries, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

It’s the player’s experience and the winning attitude that should make him an excellent target for Leicester City. He is effective and a calm defender, making 77 headed clearances for Manchester United in the Premier League last season.

Smalling’s game is all about simple passes and keeping attackers quiet, and he is one of England’s best.

While Smalling may not favour an exit from Manchester, he should keep his options open to a move to a club that has aspirations of a top six finish.

The Champions League competition is going to be a tantalising carrot that José Mourhino can dangle in front of Smalling to stay at United. But Smalling faces being marginalised at Old Trafford.

The Daily Telegraph estimates that Smalling could be snapped up for around £15 million, and with Everton and Tottenham Hotspur being slow to move for the player, there is an opportunity for Craig Shakespeare to make a landmark signing for Leicester City.
