It’s been a difficult old season for West Ham United supporters. After the success of the last campaign, and the big move to the shiny new London Stadium, many Hammers fans expected to see their side once again challenging for a spot in Europe this season.

However, after the difficult Dimitri Payet saga, which saw their best player leave West Ham and return to his native France, as well as a number of poor performances throughout the season, the Hammers have found themselves closer to the relegation zone than the European places as the season draws to and end.

One of the major issues for the Hammers has been their defence this season. After signing Southampton’s Jose Fonte, and letting James Tomkins leave to Crystal Palace, many West Ham fans thought their defensive woes had been sorted.

However, a combination of miscommunication and Slaven Bilic’s tendancy to play players out of their natural positions (such as playing Michail Antonio at right-back) has led to West Ham recording a goal difference of -15.

So how might West Ham United go about fixing the leak at the back? One way could be by considering a move for West Bromwich Albion defender, and former Manchester United man, Jonny Evans.

The Northern Ireland international has been in excellent form this season for Tony Pulis’ side, and has played a major part in the club’s remarkable rise to eighth in the table. At the age of 29, Jonny Evans has a good number of years left in him for playing at the top level, and could provide West Ham’s defence with an added injection of quality and experience.

However, West Ham United would likely need to really splash the cash to tempt the Northern Irish defender away from the Hawthorns, especially with the Baggies set to clinch a top ten finish this season. As a key player for Tony Pulis, the West Brom manager will not be open to the idea of selling Evans, and will likely ask for a large amount if any deal was to happen.

However, with the kind of reinforcement Evans could add, and the potential this signing could have for sending West Ham United back in the right direction up the table, it may well be a price worth paying!
