Newcastle United are prepared to smash their club transfer record on a player who has never played in England before.

According to the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United’s first bid of £12 million for Nikolai Jorgensen has failed and they will have to up their offer.

Newcastle are likely to have to pay around £20 million to sign the Danish international forward, if they want to take him from Feyenoord.

The Magpies would now be taking a major risk, if they go through with a move for Jorgensen.

While Newcastle do need a new striker, breaking their club record on a forward with no experience of playing in England looks like a gamble.

Jorgensen has a credible scoring record in the Eredivisie, but there is a long list of players who have impressed in Holland only to fail in the Premier League.

The good news for Jorgensen is that Newcastle’s current strikers have hardly been impressive this season, so he should be given time to adapt if he does make the move.

But with the transfer proving more expensive than Newcastle first hoped, it would have to be considered a gamble, if Rafael Benitez’s side do go through with it.
