Sadio Mane has jokingly said that he would leave Liverpool for French club Olympique Marseille if they pay up the money for his transfer.
Speaking on Pape Gueye’s Instagram live via GFFN, the Senegal captain was asked by his international teammate if he would join him at Marseille after winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time.
Gueye is one of two Senegal players in the Marseille squad, with some famous names from the African country becoming icons at the Ligue 1 side, such as defender Habib Beye and Mamadou Niang.
And after winning their country’s first-ever AFCON title, Gueye jokingly suggested that Mane, who scored the winning penalty in the shootout against Egypt, should leave Liverpool to join Marseille and play with his Senegalese teammate.
The Premier League star replied: “Marseille, make an effort, put in the money and I’ll come! You have to pay the transfer and I’ll come!”
Mane has played in France before, with the attacker coming through at FC Metz in Ligue 2 before making a move to RB Salzburg and then to the Premier League with Southampton and Liverpool.
Mane could realistically return to France in the future with Marseille
It might have been an off-hand joke, but there is a real chance that Mane could return to France in the future when his best years with Liverpool are behind him.
Ligue 1 has proven to be an incredible league for Senegalese players, and for Mane, playing for a top club in France like Marseille in the twilight years of his career could be an appealing prospect once he is finished with his career at Liverpool.
