Pawel Cibicki has suggested that he is still open to the idea of staying at Leeds United beyond this summer.
Pawel Cibicki has told Swedish outlet Expressen that he hopes that Leeds reach the Premier League this season, and admitted that he is still thinking about playing for the Whites again in the future.
As things stand, it appears that it would be a surprise to see Cibicki play for Leeds again. He struggled during his first year at Elland Road, and was loaned out to Molde soon after Marcelo Bielsa’s appointment in the summer.
He returned ahead of the January window, but swiftly left again with Elfsborg loaning him for six months. Expressen reports that the Swedish side have the option to sign the 25-year-old permanently, but Cibicki suggested that he has not given up on playing for Leeds again.
“I’m here for the summer, then I have two years left with Leeds,” he told Expressen. “Obviously I have thoughts of playing there and I am employed by them. I really hope they go all the way to the Premier League because it feels a bit like now or never.”
In fairness to Cibicki, he was not given much of a chance to show what he could do during his first year in the Championship. And there were glimpses of quality when he did play.
His performance away at Queens Park Rangers arguably turned the game around in Leeds’ favour, and he followed that up with a decisive assist in the win against Norwich City. Unfortunately, there were also plenty of occasions when the former Malmo man made no impact.
It does appear that he is facing too much of an uphill battle if he is hoping to get into Bielsa’s plans, particularly if Leeds do manage to get promoted, but it is interesting that he is not shutting the door on the idea of playing for the Whites again.
