Tottenham Hotspur beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 on Saturday evening.
Tottenham Hotspur grabbed a much-needed win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday evening, and goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was key to the victory.
Spurs came into the game off the back of three defeats in a row in all competitions, as defeats to Watford, Liverpool and Inter Milan left Mauricio Pochettino with three defeats in a row for the first time as Spurs boss.
Pochettino desperately wanted a response against Brighton, and Harry Kane’s penalty gave Spurs the lead in what was a fairly drab first half, after Glenn Murray had handled Kieran Trippier’s free kick.
A fine move late on saw Danny Rose cross for Erik Lamela to score the second, and whilst Anthony Knockaert grabbed one back for Brighton, Spurs saw out the dying embers to claim a 2-1 victory.
Pochettino was delighted with the performance of goalkeeper Gazzaniga, as his fellow Argentinian turned in a strong display in what was just his second appearance for the club.
With Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm both out, Gazzaniga – snapped up by Pochettino in the summer of 2017 having worked together at Southampton – stepped into the side and impressed between the sticks.
That was Gazzaniga’s first appearance since facing Crystal Palace under similar circumstances in November 2017, and his performances in those two games have now given him a bizarre yet impressive record.
Tottenham tweeted this morning that Gazzaniga had been voted man of the match by Spurs fans against Brighton, and having done the same against Palace last year, Gazzaniga can now boast the record of two games played, and two man of the match awards received from fans, maybe suggesting he should play more regularly.
