Tottenham Hotspur wanted to appoint Paulo Fonseca before they got Nuno, and now Newcastle United reportedly want him.

What’s the story?

The Mirror are reporting that the new Newcastle owners have Fonseca on their shortlist of potential managers to replace Steve Bruce.

An investment group led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), and also comprising PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, have taken over Newcastle from Mike Ashley.

Fonseca is without a managerial role at the moment following his departure from AS Roma at the end of last season.

Tottenham Hotspur ‘agreement’

This is not the first time that Fonseca has been linked with a club in England.

Tottenham were on the verge of appointing the 48-year-old as their manager this past summer when they were looking for a permanent successor to Jose Mourinho.

As quoted in The Mirror, the Portuguese himself said that there was an “agreement” with Spurs, but then the North London club’s sporting director, Fabio Paratici, decided to change the plan.

Nuno got the Tottenham job.

Would Paulo Fonseca be good for Newcastle?

Fonseca is a very experienced manager whose teams play good and attacking football.

The Portuguese has been in charge of major clubs such as FC Porto and AS Roma.

If Fonseca given funds and time, then he would be a very good managerial appointment for Newcastle.
