Paulo Di Canio’s comments show why Celtic were right not to sign Fabio Borini

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers was said to be interested in bringing Fabio Borini to Glasgow.

Paulo Di Canio’s comments to Calcio Mercato may just show why Fabio Borini wouldn’t have been a good addition for Celtic.

Celtic were strongly linked with the Italian over the summer transfer window, with Brendan Rodgers keen to bring the forward to Glasgow, according to the Daily Record.

However, Borini ended up making the move to AC Milan – and he has struggled to make an impact at the San Siro.

Di Canio knows Borini better than most, after managing the 26-year-old during his time at Sunderland.

And the former Bhoys and West Ham forward claims that Borini only performs for sides who are battling against relegation.

“Fabio is a player that I know pretty well since we worked together at Sunderland,” Di Canio said.

“He was with me and I would want him with me in other clubs too. Having said this, it would have to be a lower end club who is fighting in the relegation zone. He is a player that works hard but you can’t ask him for too much quality either. At Sunderland we were fighting in the relegation zone where as now he is a starter with AC Milan….”

Celtic, of course, have absolutely no worries about relegation as they have dominated Scottish football since Rodgers took charge.

Celtic have to deal with being favourites for every game they play domestically, but that is massively different to the pressure that Borini was put under at Sunderland.

Celtic ended up bringing in Patrick Roberts and Odsonne Édouard to strengthen their attack, instead of signing Borini, and that looks to have been a wise decision.
