Rotherham United manager Paul Warne has admitted wanting to sign Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sean Clare in January.

Clare has impressed in his two starts for Wednesday since returning from a productive loan spell at Gillingham last month.

And it was the 21-year-old’s success in Kent which sparked interest from the Owls’ neighbours, Rotherham.

However, the Millers’ hopes were dashed as soon as Clare came on for Wednesday during January’s Steel City derby against Sheffield United, which meant he could not play for a third club this season.

Speaking about the situation at Hillsborough as a guest on Sheffield Live TV, Warne said: “Clare’s doing really well, isn’t he? [I] like him. We were considering trying to get him before but then he played when he came back off loan.

“We knew that he’d had an outstanding spell at Gillingham. His name came up in our meetings and we were interested in bringing him to the club. He went back to Wednesday, but then they played him and as soon as they played him you can only play for two clubs in a season so that was that opportunity passed.

“We like athletes, we like forward thinking players, who just want to play forward, run forward. That’s sort of our motto really. He’d have suited us no end.”

Rotherham look to have missed their chance with Clare, who is said to have attracted interest from several Premier League and Championship clubs ahead of his contract expiring this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday have offered the Londoner a new deal, however, which means they should be entitled to compensation if he chooses to continue his career away from Hillsborough.
