Paul Scholes labelled Chelsea’s 4-1 win against nine-man Tottenham Hotspur as ‘complete madness’.
Tottenham and Chelsea played out one of the most enthralling Premier League games of all time, with several goals disallowed, sending-offs, injuries, risky high-line tactics and goals galore – Glenn Hoddle, Michael Owen and Joe Cole argued about Cristian Romero’s red card.
Many of the VAR calls came in the first half, with Paul Scholes unhappy at how long it was taking by claiming that he is ‘looking forward to Michael (Owen’s) and Howard (Webb’s) 42-hour VAR show’, as he wrote on his Instagram story.
He then added by saying ’should be done by 3 am this game’, with the first-half stoppage time reaching the 56th minute, whilst there were nine minutes of added time at the end.
Yes, VAR took its time to make its calls, but from the penalty that was awarded when Cristian Romero was sent off to Reece James staying on the field after a check for an elbow, the correct decisions were made.
That probably wasn’t the worst of it because Micky van de Ven and James Maddison’s injury were the biggest blows, especially their Dutch centre-back who could be out of action for ‘months’.
Paul Scholes on Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea
“Looking forward to Michael (Owen) and Howard (Webb’s) 42-hour VAR show this month!!,” said Scholes.
He added later on: “Should be done by 3am this game!!
Before adding in the second half: “An hour of complete madness…Loved it.”

And breathe…
A game for the ages and one that will be remembered for a very, very long time. But just like the Battle of the Bridge many years ago, it’s one Spurs fans will want to forget about.
Everything that went wrong did go wrong, and some more, with little time to recover because they play Wolves at Saturday lunchtime.
The issue facing Ange Postecoglou now is that his back four is well and truly shaken. Pedro Porro, Emerson Royal, Eric Dier and Ben Davies could be the back four ahead of the trip to Wolves.
The positive is that the international break is around the corner. Destiny Udogie will be back for Aston Villa, will Maddison also return? If so, then it’s some sort of positive.
