A marquee striker signing may be exactly what Arsenal need to push them over the line in the Premier League title race.

The Gunners have come excruciatingly close to winning the title in successive years under Mikel Arteta, only for Manchester City to pip them to the trophy both times.

But Arsenal are gearing up for another title charge and they will hope it’s third-time lucky this season.

They have addressed their weakness at left-back by signing Riccardo Calafiori in a £42million deal from Bologna whil David Raya made his stay in North London permanent.

But Arsenal continue to be linked with a move for a centre-forward, with neither Kai Havertz nor Gabriel Jesus being able to consistently find the back of the net.

Arsenal held talks with Manchester City ace Julian Alvarez this summer, while they have also sent scouts to watch Viktor Gyokeres in action.

But Paul Scholes has urged Arsenal to look closer to home and target a Premier League star.

Premier League star would score 25 goals at Arsenal

Speaking on The Overlap, Scholes predicted that Arsenal will win the league this year, but also added that they should target a new striker.

“It’s hard to say they’ve not got enough because of the amount of goals they scored, and set pieces were a big advantage to them,” Scholes said.

“I think signing a centre-forward would help, definitely. I think signing an out-and-out number nine who will guarantee you 25, 30 goals like Manchester City have, I’m pretty sure it’d help.

“It’s just whether those people are out there. Ivan Toney is probably the one who has been mentioned a lot. I think in Arsenal’s team he could score you 25 goals.”

According to Forbes, Brentford are now “tempted” to sell Toney for as little as £40million this summer.

The 28-year-old has one year remaining on his contract with The Bees, and they do not want to lose him for free next year.

HITC confirmed in July that Tottenham and Arsenal are both in the hunt for Toney with Atletico Madrid also showing an interest.

Brentford are expecting the England international to leave this summer with plenty of interest from English clubs and overseas.
