James Tomkins joined Crystal Palace from West Ham United in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes suggested on the Live Premier League Today show on BT Sport 1 on Sunday morning (broadcast from 11am, September 18, 2016) that West Ham United made a mistake in selling James Tomkins in the summer.
Tomkins left West Ham to join Premier League rivals Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window.
According to BBC Sport, Palace had to pay the Hammers a transfer fee of £10 million in order to secure the services of the 27-year-old defender.
Former United midfielder Scholes has suggested that West Ham made a mistake in selling Tomkins, who can play as a centre-back or as a right-back.
The former England international has said that he found the London club’s decision to let go of the Englishman strange.
“I also thought that the sale of Tomkins was a strange one,” said Scholes on the Live Premier League Today show on BT Sport 1 on Sunday morning (broadcast from 11am, September 18, 2016).
“Okay, he is not probably a top-drawer defender, but I think he was very settled in their defence. He is a decent defender. I thought selling him for £10 million to Crystal Palace was a strange move.”
West Ham have struggled defensively so far this season and are conceding far too many goals than they should.
The Hammers are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with three points from five matches.
Meanwhile, Palace currently find themselves eighth in the standings with seven points from five games.
