Paul Scholes has praised Cody Gakpo for his ‘lovely’ opening goal during Liverpool’s thrashing of Manchester United on Sunday at Anfield.
The Old Trafford legend was critical of a number of Manchester United players for their defending and stated how Fred ‘gets done’ by the Liverpool January signing.
It was a cagey opening to the heavyweight clash, with Jurgen Klopp’s men being the better side, and Gakpo then hitting them with a counter of devastating effect to go into the half-time break at 1-0.
Not so long ago, Gakpo was struggling and still trying to find his feet on Merseyside.
But, fast forward to the present and he has a brace against Manchester United, and four in total since he joined from PSV.
Nonetheless, Scholes was full of praise for the winger, but he wasn’t impressed by what he saw from Manchester United, as he told Premier League Productions (05/03/23 at 5:20 pm).
“It’s a lovely finish, a bit good of movement and good play by Liverpool, really,” said Scholes.
“A little bit over the place (on Dalot). You see Casemiro over there on the left-hand side. Weghorst is virtually playing as a central midfield player. You would expect Antony to be in this space, just cutting the gap out there, where it eventually comes from.
“Fred has ended up having to look after Gakpo on this left-hand side and he gets done by the movement. He is obviously not a fullback. He does have a little look at him, but that’s when Gakpo goes on the inside.
“Great weight of pass from Robertson. Varane as well, do you expect him to do better as well?”
LIVERPOOL THRASH MAN UNITED
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Liverpool have won and picked up three points, but the manner of victory and performance perhaps even surprised the most ardent of Liverpool fans.
This was the Liverpool of old. Those dark and questionable performances during these past few months seem to be fading away.
They didn’t just beat Man United, but this was a humiliation and one that they deserved.
