Paul Scholes has stated that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a player of ‘real quality’ and, if he stays fit, then he can get Everton a top-half finish.

The Manchester United legend added that Frank Lampard’s side are ‘in and around the mark’ of where they are playing really well, but just not winning enough matches.

Over the weekend, they ended their 3-game losing streak when they secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, with Calvert-Lewin adding his name to the scoresheet.

It was his first Premier League goal of the campaign, but it comes off the back of another injury-hit start for the player.

Last season, Calvert-Lewin spent more time in the treatment room than on the pitch and it resulted in him losing his place in the England set-up.

But now he is back on the pitch, Scholes shared how he just needs to keep his engine warm to really motor for his side, as he told MatchDay Extra on Premier League Productions (22/10/22 at 8:55 pm).

“They had lost the last three games and this is a big result for Frank,” said Scholes. “I think they really needed that and against a very good Crystal Palace team.

“Again, they are in and around that mark where they are playing really well but just winning enough games.

“I think Calvert-Lewin is a big plus for them and having him back. He’s a centre-forward of real quality. His fitness problems and he has had them for a while now.

“If he can get a nice run of 10-15 games out of him in the next few months, then I think Everton will have a chance of being top-half.”

CALVERT-LEWIN’S WORLD CUP CHANCES TOO LATE?

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar kicks off next month and who Gareth Southgate picks behind Harry Kane is going to be a big talking point.

At Euro 2020, it was Calvert-Lewin who was selected behind the Tottenham man after he beat Ollie Watkins and Tammy Abraham to that spot.

But fast forward to the present and it seems as though he won’t earn that golden ticket, not because he’s not good enough, but because injuries have just caused havoc on his progression.

Tammy Abraham and Ivan Toney are ahead of him, at this moment in time, and it could be argued that Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson has also pushed ahead of him.
