The former United man feels Michael Carrick is their only central midfielder capable of ‘getting the best out of their forwards.’
Former England and Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes feels Louis van Gaal’s biggest January priority should be a central midfielder.
With United’s injury problems in defence, many are calling for the Dutchman to recruit a new member of his side’s back four during the winter transfer window.
Scholes, however, feels United desperately need a midfielder to help Michael Carrick link play and help their strikers out.
His comments come ahead of tomorrow’s clash between Man United and Arsenal.
“As a United fan, I am a little concerned for them going into Saturday’s game,” Scholes wrote in his weekly column for the Independent and London Evening Standard.
“Aside from Michael Carrick at his very best, United lack a central midfielder capable of linking play and getting the best out of their forwards.
“They need that individual who can pass the ball forward, play one-twos and bring the strikers into the game.
“That kind of playmaker – a Cesc Fabregas, Luka Modric or Toni Kroos – is vital to any side. They are the brains of the team and without them the forwards can struggle.”
