Paul Scholes says he didn’t think Gabriel Martinelli produced the goods during Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Old Trafford legend felt that the difference between Arsenal and Manchester United yesterday was that Mikel Arteta’s side ‘always had a goal in them’.

In truth, before the game, if you had offered Erik ten Hag the chance that his team would score two goals at the Emirates, as well as opening the scoring, then he would have expected a return from it.

But, instead, the Premier League leaders kept fighting back again and again, including showcasing why they are the best team in the land, at this moment in time.

Whilst Bukayo Saka, who scored Arsenal’s second, and Eddie Nketiah, who netted a brace, were the stars of the show in the final third, it still allowed someone like Martinelli to have a bit of an off-day.

That was touched upon by Paul Scholes when he was discussing the difference between Arsenal and Manchester United’s goal threats, as he told Premier League Productions (22/01/23 at 6:30 pm).

“I think Arsenal with Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli, I don’t think he had his best game Martinelli, but I always felt they had a goal in them,” said Scholes.

“A lot more than Manchester United did.”

ARSENAL’S ATTACK

The fact that Martinelli can have an off-day, yet Arsenal can come from behind and beat a third-placed side 3-2, says a lot about their forward line.

What makes matters worse for the opposition is that Gabriel Jesus is still on the sidelines and Leandro Trossard, who looked brilliant from the bench, is yet to warm up.

Either way, it’s a big reason why they are sitting top, producing title-winning performances, but there is still a long way to go.
