Manchester United should have signed a replacement for Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window, suggests Paul Scholes.
Lukaku left Premier League giants United for Italian side Inter Milan this summer for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £74 million.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not sign a replacement for the Belgian international striker, and club legend Scholes believes that it was a mistake.
Scholes told talkSPORT: “That’s the one thing that disappoints me. He [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] obviously knew they were going to sell Lukaku at some point, but not to have a centre-forward lined up seems like a mistake to me.
“Whether they did, whether it dragged on too long from the club’s point of view, I don’t know. They’re going into a season without a centre-forward when it’s a club that is known for its attacking style and had probably four centre-forwards in its heyday.
“So to go in there with [Marcus] Rashford and [Anthony] Martial, who you’re not quite sure if they’re left wingers or centre-forwards, we don’t know. But I’m sure it’ll get sorted.”
Opportunity for Marcus Rashford
Lukaku is a good striker, and United should have probably signed a replacement for him, but perhaps Marcus Rashford will now get the chance to play regularly down the middle.
The 21-year-old has not always been given the opportunity to play as a striker and has often been deployed out wide, but with no Lukaku in the team, the England international could be played centrally.
The youngster has scored three goals and provided one assist in five Premier League appearances for the Red Devils so far this season, according to WhoScored.
