Paul Scholes was left baffled by Newcastle United players doing a lap of honour after they beat Manchester United 2-0 at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The former midfielder added that it just goes to show that Manchester United are still a ‘big scalp’ as Eddie Howe’s side moved into third place in the Premier League table.
It was a deserved three points for the Magpies, who were beaten by Erik ten Hag’s men in the League Cup final at Wembley back in February, with the home team dominating from back to front during this encounter.

It took a while for the goals to come, with Joe Willock opening the scoring with a close-range header after being fed by Allan Saint-Maximin – who Paul Scholes had praised after the game.
Before substitute, Callum Wilson, nodded home from a corner to seal the points for a jubilant Toon Army faithful that applauded their team off the pitch after the full-time whistle.
But as Paul Scholes watched Eddie Howe and his players go to all four corners of St James’ Park, he couldn’t believe that the Champions League-chasing side were lapping up the win in such a manner, as he told Premier League Productions (02/04/23 at 6:30 pm).
“It just goes to show that Manchester United are still a big draw because they are doing a lap of honour,” said a baffled Scholes.
“It’s a big scalp (beating Manchester United). Everyone can see that.”

NEWCASTLE FANS RIDING A WAVE
In truth, the lap of honour business is the norm from Newcastle players, it’s just probably Paul Scholes seeing it all for the first time or the fact that it’s Manchester United and he is overreacting.
Either way, one big difference compared to the previous regime is the togetherness at the club.
The man in Newcastle’s dugout has played a big part in that and he is edging closer to guiding the club back to the Champions League and it’s now in their hands.
