Paul Scholes has admitted that he is unconvinced by a key signing made by Aston Villa this summer and believes the club may have overpaid.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have been one of the busier sides in the Premier League this summer as the Midlands club embark on their first campaign in the UEFA Champions League since the Premier League began.

Aston Villa signed Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen who was named as the left-back of the tournament in the UEFA Champions League last season.

As well as this, Ross Barkley has joined Villa from Luton Town and the Villains have also signed Amadou Onana from Everton for £50 million.

Paul Scholes questions Amadou Onana move

Everton were keen on moving on Onana earlier this summer but Villa were the only side to strike a deal with the Toffees to land the Belgian midfielder.

Manchester United and Arsenal were previously interested in Onana but it is Emery’s Villa who completed a deal to sign the former LOSC Lille midfielder.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes, speaking on The Overlap’s Fan Debate, has questioned Villa’s decision to sign Onana.

“I think Douglas Luiz will be a big miss,” Scholes began. “I don’t really see the Onana deal, I didn’t see anything at Everton or at Belgium and they’ve spent £50 million on him.

“I originally thought £50 million, that seems like a lot but with Emery you never know but for me £50 million for Onana is a lot of money.”

A new midfielder was always going to be the priority after Douglas Luiz completed his move to Juventus earlier this summer.

Unai Emery has been quick to praise Onana

Whilst there may be some questions about the fee that Villa paid to Everton for Onana, it appears that Emery is a big fan of the Belgian.

“Onana is progressively getting better,” the former Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain boss told the official Aston Villa website. “He’s playing trying to quickly understand our tactical idea and he played some minutes at centre-back.”

It has been an inconsistent pre-season for Villa, who suffered a 4-1 defeat to Columbus Crew, but the signing of Onana looks to be one of the key positives for Villa this season.
