Paul Robinson warns Tottenham Hotspur about Christian Eriksen’s future

Tottenham Hotspur have edged closer to securing Champions League football for next season.

Paul Robinson has warned the Tottenham Hotspur board that they risk losing Christian Eriksen if they don’t tie him down to a new deal.

On Tuesday evening, Eriksen scored an 89th-minute goal to help Spurs record a tough 1-0 win over Brighton and he stated after the match that he is open to extending his contract which is due to expire next season, as reported by BBC Sport.

Those three points were valuable to Mauricio Pochettino’s side because it means their hopes of finishing in the top four have now increased.

After Eriksen scored the winning goal against Chris Hughton’s side, former Premier League goalkeeper Robinson spoke about the senior player’s future in North London.

“You can’t let a player of his quality go into the last year of his contract because come January he can speak to other teams,” Robinson told Bein Sport. “There must be something amiss. They’re obviously talking. Tottenham won’t want him to leave at all. If they come to a point where negotiations have broken down that far then they may have to sell him and cash in.

“They will make the top four. But a player of his level of ability and his ambitions, they’ll be no shortage of suitors. He’d definitely want to play in the Champions League. When Real Madrid come knocking, they don’t come knocking twice and as Tottenham have proved in the past they are willing to sell players and re-invest in the team.

“If it comes to a point where they can’t agree on a contract with him, there’s going to have to be an executive business decision made where we can’t allow a player of his quality leave for nothing, so they would have to sell him.”

On his day, Eriksen is one of the best playmakers not just in England’s top-flight, but in Europe and that was proven against Brighton.

Aside from an almighty collapse, Pochettino’s side will finish in the top four, but the focus from their supporters will be on their Champions League semi-final against Ajax.

Eriksen is a product of the Dutch giants’ famous academy and if Tottenham are to progress then players like Eriksen will need to be at their utmost best.
