Paul Robinson suggested on Sky Sports Football (11:42am, April 28, 2019) that Leeds United should not have signed Patrick Bamford from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2018 as he is not an out-and-out striker.

The former Leeds goalkeeper played with Bamford at Burnley, and he does not believe that the 25-year-old can score goals on a regular basis.

Robinson has also pointed out the number of clubs and loan spells in the former England Under-21 international forward’s career so far.

The 25-year-old started his professional club football career at Nottingham Forest before moving to Chelsea.

During his time at the London club, Bamford had loan spells at Milton Keynes Dons, Derby County, Middlesbrough, Crystal Palace, Norwich City and Burnley, before joining Boro on a permanent contract in 2017.

According to Sky Sports, Leeds paid Middlesbrough a transfer fee of £7 million in the summer of 2018 to secure the services of Bamford.

The forward has had a tough time with injury this campaign, and has made 15 starts and seven substitute appearances in the Championship for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in the process, according to WhoScored.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie also believes that Bamford does not suit Bielsa’s Leeds.

Robinson said about Bamford on Sky Sports Football (11:42am, April 28, 2019): “I was with Patrick for six months at Burnley, and he is not an out-and-out goalscorer. He gets his goals, hence the reason he always gets his move, teams will pay money for him. Leeds paid £7m rising to £10m.

“Granted, the lads had a really bad injury this season, he has only just come back into the team, but he is having to take a burden scoring goals week in week out, and that’s not him. He is 25 now, he has had 10 clubs already, it tells you something about him.”

Hendrie said about Bamford on Sky Sports Football (11:41am, April 28, 2019): “Bamford, is he going to get 20 goals a season? I don’t feel that he is that sort of player for this Leeds side, I really don’t.”
