The Tottenham Hotspur man was left out of England’s win over Malta.
Paul Parker has told BBC Radio Scotland, quoted by Inside Futbol, that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier should demand to start England’s clash with Slovenia.
England visit Slovenia on Tuesday as the Three Lions look to make it three wins from three World Cup qualifiers in Group F tomorrow night.
They beat Malta 2-0 at Wembley on the weekend as goals from Daniel Sturridge and Dele Alli did the damage for the hosts on a night which saw Wayne Rooney jeered.
The Manchester United man was seemingly booed by some sections of the Wembley crowd for a relatively indifferent midfield performance.
The 30-year-old started ahead of Dier and interim coach Gareth Southgate said afterwards that the Tottenham man was left out to protect his hamstring injury.
But Parker, a three-time Premier League winner who earned 19 England caps, says the Spurs star should be banging down Southgate’s door if captain Rooney is preferred to him again on Tuesday.
“If I was Eric Dier, in a club situation, I’d be knocking at the manager’s door and saying why aren’t I playing?” he told BBC Radio Scotland, quoted by Inside Futbol.
“I’m playing in one of the best teams in the Premier League at this moment in time in Tottenham Hotspur and I’m doing a good job in that position, yet you’re playing someone who is playing totally out of position and not doing a job properly.”
Dier has once again been a big player for Tottenham this season, starting five Premier League games as Mauricio Pochettino’s side sit second in the table.
