Paul Merson’s string of poor predictions have been well publicised this season, and the Sky Sports pundit has another false claim to add to his collection – after suggesting that he expected Rafael Benitez to leave Newcastle United this summer.

Merson told the Daily Star that he believed that Benitez would leave St. James’ Park, to seek a new challenge.

However, the Spanish boss has recently committed his future to Newcastle, as he wants to guide them while they are back in the Premier League.

Merson said, at the start of the month: “Rafa Benitez can leave Newcastle a hero if he walks out this summer – and I think he will,” Merson wrote.

“He’ll wonder how much further he can take them in the Premier League.

“It doesn’t look like they will be denied promotion because of the tax-fraud probe but what if they’re hit with a transfer embargo?

“He might wonder whether it’s worth it if he doesn’t get a big transfer budget.

“Without new signings they’ll finish 15th or 16th at best in the Prem.”

Newcastle fans will be glad that Merson was incorrect with his analysis, as Benitez is so popular on Tyneside.

Magpies supporters reacted with joy, after it was confirmed that Benitez would be staying on.

Newcastle are now set to invest heavily in their first-team squad, as they look to compete back in the Premier League.

Benitez has reportedly been handed a £100 million transfer budget, with as many as seven new signings targeted (Chronicle).
