“I would say the player they cannot afford to lose,” said Merson on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, November 19, 2016) while discussing West Ham’s reported interest in Deeney.

“He brings that team together in the dressing room, on the pitch, he is their leader. No, I mean, that would be bad news for Watford.

“That is one player they have to keep in my opinion, and a great move for West Ham, great move for West Ham, but for Watford, they must do everything to keep him.”

West Ham are 17th in the Premier League table at the moment, while Watford are currently eighth in the standings.
