Sunderland are in the Premier League relegation zone at the moment.
Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, December 3, 2016) that Sunderland can survive in the Premier League.
Merson made the comments following Sunderland’s victory over Leicester City at home at the weekend.
The Black Cats returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over the Foxes.

David Moyes’s side are now third from bottom in the league table with 11 points from 14 matches.
Sunderland are just a point behind 17th-placed West Ham United and have a chance of staving off relegation to the Championship at the end of the season.
Former Arsenal attacker Merson has suggested that Moyes’s side can escape the drop as they have Jermain Defoe.

Defoe is one of the best strikers in the Premier League and is a key figure in the current Sunderland team.
The former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur striker has scored scored eight goals and created six chances in 14 league matches for the black Cats so far this season.
“Yeah I can do, they have got Jermain Defoe,” said Merson on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, December 3, 2016) when asked if he can see Sunderland surving. “For me, it is as simple as that. They have got Jermain Defoe. He scores goals.”
Sunderland will take on Swansea City away from home at the Liberty Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
