The Magpies are ‘not that good a team’ and will regret seeing their boss go, according to the pundit.
Newcastle United fans did not like Alan Pardew because ‘he was a southerner’ and will regret seeing him leave for Crystal Palace – that’s the opinion of Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.
The former Premier League midfielder’s controversial claims suggest Pardew did an ‘unbelievable job’ at Newcastle and that they are ‘not that good a team.’
And Newcastle will struggled without the Palace-bound 53-year-old, according to Merson.
“Probably because he was a southerner,” he said on Sky Sports, as quoted by the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.
“Dennis Wise was the same. He pulled up trees there, they are not that good a team. Those fans will realise when he’s gone what an unbelievable job he did. If they were in a relegation battle now it wouldn’t have shocked me one iota.
“He has done an unbelievable job there and those fans, come March, will be sitting there thinking ‘Cor, he was a good manager he was’. We’ve seen it a million times. Alan Curbishley at Charlton.”
Fellow Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier did not agree, however…
“He was a little bit fortunate to be in the job in my opinion. There was a long period of results where a lot of other managers wouldn’t have survived.”
