Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri has impressed on his fleeting appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side to date.

Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that he believes Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri has been the signing of the summer.

Liverpool brought in Shaqiri from Stoke City for just £12 million, and he has impressed since moving to Anfield, despite playing a rotational role.

Shaqiri has proven that he can provide good cover for Liverpool’s star studded attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

And although Merson feels that his comments on Shaqiri are controversial, he has been very impressed by what he has seen.

“It’s the first name that popped into my head, and I’ll probably be shot down because there’ll be others who have done more, but for the price Liverpool paid for him, and how he’s slotted in when they’ve given their regular front three a rest, I think he’s done very well,” Merson said.

“You didn’t immediately think he would fit in with their system because his work-rate has been in question in the past, but he’s stepped up to it. He’s impressed me more than I thought he would with that, but I think it’s been good for him to work under Jurgen Klopp. You’ve seen him having a go at him when his levels have dropped and he’s responded and come up with some goals.”

According to the Liverpool Echo, Shaqiri signed a contract worth over £100,000-a-week at Liverpool – but he has proven to be great value for money.

Shaqiri has one goal and three assists to his name in three assists for the Reds across all competitions.

The Switzerland international is actually putting pressure on some of Jurgen Klopp’s more regular starters, as he threatens to take their place.

Liverpool are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
