The Toffees have enjoyed a bright start to the season, save for one loss away from Goodison Park which has been described as a possible ‘blessing in disguise’.
Paul Merson has given his verdict on Everton’s hopes of finishing in the top six of the Premier League, suggesting they are in with a shout – providing they can get themselves going (Daily Star).
The Toffees have enjoyed a fairly bright start to the 2019-20 season, with a goalless draw away at Crystal Palace followed up by a solid 1-0 win over Watford at Goodison Park, though they were lacklustre in the subsequent loss at Aston Villa.
Everton then overcame Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup and went into the international break on the back of a 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers that put them sixth in the table on seven points.
With Marco Silva’s side finishing last season strongly and bolstering the ranks over the summer, culminating in the current good start, Sky Sports pundit and retired footballer Merson thinks the Blues have every chance to break into the top six.
After speaking about Leicester – “certainly no reason why (they) can’t finish in the top six and get into Europe” – in his Daily Star column, Merson continued: “Everton have a chance too if they can get themselves going.
“Getting beat by Villa was a blessing in disguise. I think it woke a few players up. Marco Silva changed his team after that and it’s starting to click. They’re a better team now. Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean have to play. If he sticks with it they won’t be miles away.”
