Paul Merson has warned West Ham that Grady Diangana could come back to ‘haunt’ the club, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (12/09/20 at 1:10 pm).
In a transfer decision that is still seemingly causing negative ripples across East London, West Ham sold their academy star to West Brom and Merson feels it’s a pretty ‘dangerous’ call from the club.
The Hammers suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, which clearly doesn’t help lift the already seemingly toxic and angry mood at the London Stadium.
Merson shared his thoughts on the Diangana sale and thinks David Moyes wasn’t the one who decided to let him go.
“It will be interesting to see who has let him go, it probably isn’t David Moyes,” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “It’s a dangerous sell this is. It’s a dangerous sell.
“These two teams. You would expect West Ham to be around the bottom half. You would expect West Brom to be struggling to stay up. But if this lad produces what he did in the Championship, and he can do that because he’s a free spirit who make things happen [then] he’s dangerous.
“He could hant West Ham. If West Ham start slowly and all of a sudden he starts playing well and ripping it up at West Brom, where he will be given a license to go and entertain. It’s dangerous.”
West Ham’s record transfers
- Sebastien Haller
£45 million
- Felipe Anderson
£41.5 million
- Marko Arnautovic
£25 million
- Pablo Fornals
£24 million
- Issa Diop
£22 million
This scenario has perhaps been written in the stars because West Ham will travel to West Brom on the penultimate day of the Premier League season in May.
Now, given the way Moyes’ side are going, many of their fans are expecting them to be fighting for their lives once again towards the back end of the season.
The last thing the club needs is for Diangana to pop up and score the goal that either sends them down to the Championship or even plays a part in it.
