Everton have made no secret of their desire to break into the top six this season.

Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that he believes Everton will finish in seventh position this season, even if they bring in Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City.

Everton have been chasing Sigurdsson for much of the transfer window to date, and Ronald Koeman is confident of landing the Icelandic international.

Merson admits that Sigurdsson’s arrival at Goodison Park would be a big boost to the Toffees.

Gylfi Sigurdsson of Swansea City during the pre season friendly match between Barnet and Swansea City at The Hive on July 12, 2017 in Barnet, England.

However, the former Arsenal man simply cannot see Koeman’s side breaking up the top six this term.

He said: “You look at it, the £30m spent on goalkeeper Jordan Pickford; if he saves them seven or eight points, they’re still going to finish seventh.

“If they can get Gylfi Sigurdsson that would be a big boost, but at the moment I think this team needs to gel.

“They’re another team in the Europa League, and they will be really going for it, because fans want silverware at Goodison Park. For me, they consolidate this year and go for silverware, but the future is looking bright for them.”

Everton’s transfer business has raised eye brows this summer, with a number of new signings joining up.

Everton have brought in 10 new players to date this summer, with Sigurdsson still set to join up.

The Toffees finished in seventh place last term, and have made no secret of their desire to break into the top four in the coming years.

Everton get their season under way at the weekend, when they take on Stoke City.
