Paul Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (30/01/21 at 12:50 pm) that Tottenham need to give Tanguy Ndombele the ball as much as they can.

Tottenham didn’t even look like scoring during their defeat against the Premier League champions on Thursday night, but one man stood out.

In the summer, Thiago Alcantara was bossing the midfield as Bayern Munich added a sixth European crown to their cabinet, but Ndombele was brushing him aside like he’s a newbie to the game in midweek.

During Merson’s playing days, he could make the ball talk like no other and he shared that he has been seriously impressed with Tottenham’s 24-year-old.

On Ndombele being the big success story: “Very much so,” said Merson. “For me, I would get him on the ball as much as I can.

“He squared up Thiago when he went to take him and he’s just pulling him out of the way and coming out. The lad can play. He grows with confidence.

“There are not many times, I dread to think how long, that Mourinho got it wrong and he did [against Liverpool]. And that’s not like him. He’s probably one of the best tacticians around. This lad has to get on the ball.”

Ndombele is fast becoming one of the best midfielders in the country and Spurs fans will be excited as to where his potential could take them.

There will be a number of relieved faces in North London, including a certain Daniel Levy, who would have been worried 12 months ago that the big bucks they paid for Ndombele was about to be wasted.

But Jose Mourinho’s forthright ways has got the best out of a player who carries the ball as easy as Harry Kane finds Heung-Min Son for a goal.
