Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson predicts that Tottenham striker Harry Kane will move to Manchester United, if Zlatan Ibrahimovic leaves the club.
The 35-year-old has been sensational for the Red Devils since joining the club on a free transfer from PSG last summer. He has scored 27 goals for the north London club in all competitions this season, but doubts remain whether he will extend his stay beyond the summer.
Merson believes that if Zlatan leaves the club, Harry Kane will be the first choice for United to be his replacement. Tottenham would be requiring money to pay for their new stadium, and may find it difficult to refuse offers from United.
“Then you look at Zlatan Ibrahimovic. To do what he has in this league at 35 is amazing. He’s carried Manchester United this season,” wrote Merson in his column for the Daily Star.
“But he won’t be sticking around if he doesn’t think they can win the title. He won’t want to end his career as a nearly man.
“If he goes, I think Harry Kane will probably go to Manchester United as his replacement. I don’t see how Tottenham could turn the money down because they’ve got to pay for their new stadium.”
Kane to United – will it happen?
If Pochettino stays at the club, there is no way he will sanction Kane’s move to a rival club. However, if he leaves the club, Kane may opt to look for a career elsewhere.
Secondly, one can sense that Pochettino is building something special at White Hart Lane. There is a lot of positive vibe going on around the club. There is Champions League football around, Premier League title expectations and most importantly a new stadium – Kane and other Spurs players would want to be a part of this new revolution.
There is no doubt that Kane would be a great signing for United. He is approaching the peak of his career, but the question mark remains whether United can reach the dizzy heights of success again under Jose Mourinho.
Tottenham surely will require money to pay for their new stadium, but it will be more important for them is to win silverware and build a strong foundation for the future. With Kane and Pochettino around, Spurs have a great chance to do so.
