The former Arsenal midfielder believes the Bayern Munich striker could go for such a price.
Paul Merson has once again questioned Arsenal’s ambition and believes they have the money to buy anyone in the world, according to his regular column in the Daily Star.
And Merson even feels Arsenal wouldn’t be turned down if they bid £70 million for Robert Lewandowski.
The pundit maintains that the Gunners are extremely light up front and has lambasted the north London side’s mediocrity when presented with a real title-winning chance.
Merson told the Star: “Arsenal have the money. They could buy almost anyone in the world. If you bid £70m for Robert Lewandowski, do you think they’d turn it down?
“If Olivier Giroud gets injured, who’s playing up front? This is their best chance to win the league. Chelsea won’t be this bad next season. Liverpool and United will only get better.”
It’s an ambitious claim but it does hint at a certain attitude that prevails at Arsenal – one that clearly holds them back.
When Arsene Wenger was asked about ‘same old Arsenal’ on Match of the Day recently, he replied by suggesting same old Arsenal is finishing at the top for the last 20 years.
That is the definition of complacency. No league title in over 10 years and Wenger thinks that’s the same as being at the top. Arsenal have won two FA Cups in a row but that certainly doesn’t justify the Gunners’ unwillingness to take more risks.
