Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that the arrangement of Tottenham’s fixture list could be crucial to their chances of competing for the Premier League title next season.

Spurs have been the last team standing between the eventual champions and the title in the last two seasons, so will undoubtedly be looking to take that next step next year.

But despite the fact that everyone has to play everyone home and away, Merson has suggested that the fact that Tottenham are playing their home matches at Wembley next term means that the way the fixture list plays out could be critical to Spurs’ chances of success.

“I think the fixture list is very, very important for Spurs come June. I really think they need to be playing the lesser teams first up at Wembley, so they can get their confidence up,” he told Sky Sports.

“You don’t want three of Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City coming to Wembley in the first five home games. It’s massively important.”

Spurs’ Champions League campaign this past season – where they played at the national stadium – has left many to wonder whether they will be able to replicate anything like the form they have shown at White Hart Lane this term.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went through the entire league season unbeaten at home, and it would undoubtedly be difficult to replicate that record regardless of which stadium they are playing at – they dropped just four points in all of their home league games this past season.

But while Pochettino will be adamant if they start slowly that playing at Wembley is not a factor, the voices of those doubting them will surely only get louder if they fail to hit the ground running, and it may not be out of the question to suggest that that may have a negative impact on the squad.
