Would Watford striker Troy Deeney be a good signing for Newcastle United or West Bromwich Albion in the January transfer window?

Paul Merson has suggested to Sky Sports that Watford striker Troy Deeney would be a good signing for Newcastle United or West Bromwich Albion in the January transfer window.

The former Arsenal and Aston Villa star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Deeney would keep Newcastle or West Brom in the Premier League if he went there.

Merson told Sky Sports: “I would be surprised if he didn’t go in this transfer window. You look at West Brom, you look at Newcastle. If he went to one of them two, I would be shocked if they went down.”

Deeney is struggling for playing time at Watford at the moment, but there is no doubt that he is one of the better strikers in the Premier League.

According to The Sun, both Newcastle and West Brom are interested in signing Deeney in the January transfer window.

Both the Magpies and the Baggies are struggling for survival in the Premier League at the moment and are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

While the 29-year-old would be a good signing for Newcastle or West Brom, the question is whether Watford could sell them Deeney.

After all, the Hornets, just like the Magpies and the Baggies, are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season, and they may not be open to the idea of strengthening their direct rivals.
