Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Tottenham Hotspur should be signing the ‘gem’ that is West Ham United’s Marko Arnautovic.

The 29-year-old striker has been left out of West Ham’s squad for today’s clash Bournemouth, amid speculation of a £35 million move to Bournemouth [BBC Sport].

And Arnautovic, who has seven goals in 16 Premier League games for the Irons this season, might just be needed at Tottenham.

Spurs have been rocked by the news that Harry Kane will be out until March at the earliest with an ankle injury.

Speculation is rife that the North Londoners will sign a replacement rather than rely on Fernando Llorente for the next two months, but Merson reckons that the Austria international should interest Mauricio Pochettino and his Premier League rivals.

He wrote in The Daily Star: “Arnautovic is a gem. If you were Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United or Tottenham you would take him tomorrow.

“He could play for any of those teams. He’s a really good player and he’s not just a centre-forward.”

According to Spotrac, Arnautovic is on around £100,000 per week with the Hammers and that might represent a problem for Tottenham, especially if they’re only interested in short-term cover Kane.

Pochettino has reportedly [Football London] promoted academy striker Kazaiah Sterling for tomorrow’s trip to Fulham, underlining their need for another goalscorer.
