Liverpool will be desperate to win the Premier League title this season.

Paul Merson answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

When speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, Paul Merson suggested that he is worried about Liverpool’s lack of strength in depth this season.

The Reds were mightily unlucky not to win the Premier League title last season, missing out by just a single point to Manchester City.

They kicked off their 2019/20 campaign in fine fashion, however, thrashing newly promoted Norwich City 4-1 at Anfield last night.

Jurgen Klopp failed to bring any marquee signings to the club this summer, however. And that might just prove to be costly throughout the course of what will undoubtedly be a long and arduous campaign.

And Merson highlighted that exact point, when speaking exclusively to the Daily Star:

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool is congratulated by team-mate Virgil van Dijk after scoring his side's second goal during the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Norwich City at...

“Liverpool will probably come second. But I worry for them when they have to have Virgil Van Dijk, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane churn out so many games. That’s a big ask. Liverpool got to the Champions League final. Salah and Mane went to the African Nations Cup. Van Dijk went to the Nations league final.

He went on to say:

They’ve played a lot of football. But they are going to have to play basically every game for Liverpool to win the title. If any of them get injured that’s Liverpool majorly weakened.”

If the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk do indeed stay fit for the entire season and avoid suspensions, there is no reason why Liverpool cannot go on step further and win their first top flight title since 1990.

A lot needs to happen in order to make that a realistic possibility this term, however.

And Klopp will be hoping that he doesn’t live to regret his failure to adequately strengthen his Reds squad this summer.
