Tottenham Hotspur are widely considered to be genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season.

Paul Merson shared the one reason why he thinks Tottenham will not win the Premier League title, when speaking on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday programme yesterday (Saturday December 1st).

Spurs currently sit in fourth position in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, although they do have a game in hand – today’s North London Derby away at Arsenal.

Tottenham failed to sign a single player during the summer transfer window but, amazingly, it seems as though they have actually improved as a team.

Merson doesn’t believe that they will win the Premier League title this season, however.

The former Arsenal man responded when asked why Tottenham will not win the league this term, when speaking on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday programme yesterday:

“Because there’s a team called Man City! That’s the only reason I can give because they are a really good team.”

The main reason why Spurs have improved this season is that many of their players have improved from last term – none more so than Moussa Sissoko.

The Frenchman’s turnaround in form has been pivotal to Tottenham’s best ever start to a Premier League season.

If Spurs are to challenge for the title this season, however, Mauricio Pochettino will need every single one of his players to be on their very best form between now and May.

And it is a testament to Manchester City’s quality that even that might not be enough.
