Tottenham Hotspur are set to move into their new stadium before the end of the season.
Paul Merson was a guest on Sky Sports’ The Debate programme last night, and suggested that Tottenham moving to their new stadium this season could be a really big problem for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, as they continue their quest for a top four finish.
Spurs currently sit in third spot in the Premier League table, one point clear of fourth placed Arsenal, three ahead of fifth placed Manchester United, and four clear of sixth placed Chelsea.
Pochettino’s side are currently in the midst of a woeful run of form domestically, having taken just one point from their last four Premier League outings, and their place inside the top four is now under serious threat.
Tottenham are set to move into their new stadium after the international break, but Merson believes that could spell trouble for the north London outfit.
The Arsenal legend urged Spurs to play the rest of the season at Wembley, during his guest appearance on Sky Sports’ The Debate programme last night:
“You want to be in Tottenham’s position, of course you do. I’ve seen their fixtures and I think they will be alright, I think their home games are good fixtures. The only problem that could go against them is they are moving into a new stadium. If I was them, I’d stay at Wembley for the rest of the season. I don’t know anyone who has moved into a new stadium and hit the ground running.”
Tottenham face Liverpool away next on March 31st, and should they lose to Jürgen Klopp’s side, and Arsenal and Chelsea win their games, Pochettino’s men would unbelievably find themselves outside the top four.
And that really would be a terrible way for them to head into their new stadium the following week.
Spurs must arrest their slide at Anfield in 18 days time, where a win would give them just the boost they need heading into the final stretch.
