Paul Merson suggests Christian Eriksen’s future at Tottenham Hotspur could influence Mauricio Pochettino’s.
Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Mauricio Pochettino should leave Tottenham Hotspur for Manchester United if the chance came, and believes that lingering doubt over a number of key players – including Christian Eriksen – could be deciding factors for the Argentine.
The esteemed Tottenham boss is favourite to become Jose Mourinho’s long-term successor at Old Trafford following the Portuguese’s sacking last month.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose United side face Pochettino’s Spurs on Sunday, has stepped into the role on a temporary basis and it remains to be seen if the Premier League giants keep their former player beyond the end of this season.
In addition to the 47-year-old, there is also major doubt over whether some of his best players will be in North London for long, with Eriksen only having 18 months left on his contract.
The Daily Mail have reported that Tottenham chief Daniel Levy is willing to let him leave for free in the summer of 2020 but a big offer could tempt the wily chairman into a sale.
Danny Rose and Toby Alderweireld are also only contracted to the club for another couple of years, and Merson believes that such uncertainty isn’t positive for Tottenham in regards to keeping Pochettino in charge.
“If I was Pochettino I would take the Manchester United job if it was offered to him,” he told Sky Sports. “You got to weigh it all up. Spurs have almost moved into their new stadium but Christian Eriksen looks like he could be on his way, that would be a massive loss.
“Danny Rose has not signed a contract, it would be a loss if he goes. And then there’s Toby Alderweireld, who has signed an extension but that only means his transfer fee is worth more.”
