Former Arsenal attacking midfielder Paul Merson has predicted on Skysports.com that Southampton will not get relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.

The Saints are 16th in the league table at the moment with 19 points from 22 matches, a point clear of the relegation zone.

Southampton will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Everton at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League.

Merson wrote on Skysports.com: “Ralph Hasenhuttl has definitely given Southampton a bounce factor. He’s got a plan and is bringing different ideas to the table. They won’t go down.”

Staving off relegation

Ralph Hasenhuttl has been superb for Southampton since he was appointed the manager of the Saints in early December.

The performances and the results of the Saints have improved since then, and there is a very good chance that they could avoid the dreaded drop to the Championship at the end of the season.

Recent wins against Leicester City and Arsenal and the draw with Chelsea underline what Southampton are capable of, and the Saints will be confident of at least taking a point against Everton this afternoon.

A win against the Toffees is going to be massive in Southampton’s quest to avoid relegation.
