Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has spoken highly of Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey in The Daily Star.

Merson has stated that Shelvey’s passion range is better than Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.

The former England international, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has also claimed that the Newcastle midfielder’s passing range is the best in the Premier League.

While backing Shelvey to get a chance for England ahead of the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia in the summer, Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “Shelvey deserves a chance too.

“No-one else passes the ball like him. He has the best range in the league in my opinion. Even Jack Wilshere doesn’t have his passing range.”

Jack Wilshere of Arsenal celebrates victory with fans during the Carabao Cup Semi-Final Second Leg at Emirates Stadium on January 24, 2018 in London, England.

Bold claim

Shelvey, who earns £70,000 per week as salary at Newcastle according to Spotrac.com, is a very good midfielder who has a lot of quality, but it is quite a bold claim that he has the best passing range in the Premier League.

Kevin De Bruyne is the best midfielder in the Premier League, and has the best passing range in the English top flight.

The Manchester City star is also a much better player than Shelvey and is world-class; the former Chelsea man is also more complete and is far more consistent than the Newcastle midfielder.

Shelvey has been on the books of Newcastle since January 2016 when he joined from Swansea City for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £12 million.
