Sunderland are currently bottom of the Premier League table.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Paul Merson has claimed that even Jose Mourinho would not have an instant impact with this Sunderland squad.
The Black Cats underwent a change in management in the summer as Sam Allardyce left to take the England job and David Moyes replaced him.
The Scot has endured a disastrous start to his reign; with Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Arsenal meaning that they have now gone 10 games without a win in the Premier League.
It leaves them bottom of the table and seven points from safety after Middlesbrough beat Bournemouth.
“David Moyes is in a position now where he has to win football matches, it’s a lot easier to go somewhere and say you will defend,” he told Sky Sports.
“He shouldn’t get the sack because when he got the job they said they had been chasing him for ages. Unless you’re going to get Sam Allardyce, Moyes is still one of the top managers about.
“If Jose Mourinho went into that club tomorrow morning would it be any different? I don’t think so.”
The pressure is already on Moyes, with bookmakers making him the favourite to be sacked. Merson has shown him sympathy, though, claiming that even Mourinho would not have an instant impact with the current squad.
It will be interesting to see how long Sunderland stick with Moyes if this poor start continues for much longer.
They have not been hesitant in firing managers to turn things around in the past and the Scot is surely under pressure after picking up just two points from 10 games.
Owner Ellis Short has openly discussed having chased Moyes before, though, and that may give him extra time to turn the situation around.
