Liverpool players are going to be heavily featured at Euro 2024 this summer.
Whilst your obvious names from daunting Dutchman Virgil van Dijk to the heartbeat of the Hungarian midfield Dominik Szoboszlai will get picked, others might not be so fortunate.
Ahead of the final set of international matches before Euro 2024, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has made a return to Gareth Southgate’s England squad after a four-year absence.
But Paul Merson has claimed that his former Liverpool teammate, Jordan Henderson, wouldn’t want the versatile defender in the final squad because it would then mean he doesn’t play or get picked.
The outspoken pundit highlighted how the Charlton academy product provides some much-needed ‘pace’ to England’s backline.
If that extra speed is there, then Paul Merson thinks only Declan Rice will be the sitter in the middle of the park for Gareth Southgate.
But he suggested, with Joe Gomez in the XI, it means a place on the bench or not even in the squad for the Ajax star, and he simply doesn’t want that.
Either way, Paul Merson says he would be ‘shocked’ if the 26-year-old Liverpool defender isn’t heading to Euro 2024 in Germany.
Joe Gomez at Euro 2024
“Henderson doesn’t need a Gomez in the squad,” said Merson. “He doesn’t need pace at the back because he doesn’t get in otherwise. He doesn’t get in the squad.
“If we had pace at the back we only need Declan Rice (as the sitting midfielder), but because we haven’t, then we need two protective players.
“I would be shocked if Gomez didn’t go. I would be shocked – he can play all across the back. He could even go into midfield and do a job. He has been very good.”

Deserved recall for Joe Gomez
It needs to be highlighted that Gomez’s long-term injury in 2020 started his absence from the England squad.
By the time he returned to action, he didn’t play as much as he would have liked, with van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip all earning more minutes than him.
And then when he did, the performances weren’t pleasant and even the player would admit that himself.
All of this just resulted in further snubs from England and he couldn’t argue against it.
But this season, with the Reds chasing all four trophies, Gomez has been out of this world, mainly at left-back and he probably deserves to start for his country now.
