Former Arsenal attacking midfielder Paul Merson said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News last Saturday afternoon (12:51pm, October 14, 2017) that Everton are missing Gareth Barry.

Barry joined West Bromwich Albion from Everton in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by The Express & Star to be worth £1 million.

The 36-year-old defensive midfielder moved to the Toffees on a permanent deal in the summer of 2014 following a season-long loan spell at Goodison Park from Manchester City.

Merson said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News last Saturday afternoon (12:51pm, October 14, 2017) about Everton: “They spent all that money and they let their best player go – Gareth Barry. They are missing him. They miss Gareth Barry.”

Barry is a hard-working and reliable midfielder who does his job well, but the Englishman is not exactly a ‘great’ player.

At the age of 36, it is clear that the former Aston Villa star is coming towards the end of his career.

Everton do have enough midfielders in their squad; in fact, the midfield department is one of their strongest areas.

What is happening at the moment is that the players are not playing well and manager Ronald Koeman is unable to get the best out of his new signings.

Things will improve for Everton as the season progresses, and one suspects that the Toffees are not going to miss Barry anymore.
