The Everton stopper has received criticism for his role in his side’s defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
Paul Merson criticised Jordan Pickford for his error against Liverpool at the weekend, when speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, suggesting that the Everton goalkeeper has been an accident waiting to happen recently.
The 24-year-old joined the Toffees from Sunderland in the summer of 2017, for a fee believed to be worth somewhere in the region of £30 million, and he has proven to be a really solid addition for the club on the most part.
Pickford was to blame for his side’s defeat at Anfield on Sunday, however, and questions are beginning to be asked of the England international.
Merson told Sky Sports how his error for Everton at the weekend was expected, suggesting that he has been an accident waiting to happen:
“Everton were really good against Liverpool but the error from Jordan Pickford was an accident waiting to happen. It was only a matter of time before because he’s got away with a few errors recently.”
Pickford will have to forget his error against Liverpool very quickly, with seven games to come between now and January 1st.
Everton currently sit in sixth spot in the Premier League table, and if they are to remain there for the remainder of the season, they will need their goalkeeper to rediscover his best form sooner rather than later.
