Pundit Paul Merson has told SkySports he is disappointed to see Leicester City sack Craig Shakespeare.

The Foxes fired Shakespeare earlier this week after a poor run of results which has left them sitting in 18th place after eight games, having collected only six points.

Merson believes Leicester were too harsh, because their fixture list had been so tough.

Days earlier Leicester had drawn at home to West Bromwich Albion.

Paul Merson answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

Merson said: “Craig Shakespeare’s sacking, what’s all that about? Why give him the job? Where did they think they were going to finish? I know they’re in the bottom three but they’ve played five of the top seven teams.

“For me, they’re in a position they should be with the games they’ve had, but this period coming up would have been his time to show what he’s about.”

Merson went onto criticise Leicester for not already having a manager lined up, commenting that with their resources, it should be easier to get a replacement in before their next match.

Leicester’s fixture this weekend is away to Swansea City, and Merson is tipping Leicester for a 2-1 defeat.

While Leicester probably do have the facility to have appointed a new manager already, it can be more important to take their time and ensure the right decision is made.

With this in mind, it would have mace more sense to part ways with Shakespeare heading into the international break, and give themselves a fortnight to work with.

Swansea are two points ahead of Leicester, but it is tight, as this gap places them five places higher in the table.
